organization of performers and associated personnel (especially
theatrical) Guitar Planet is a "discovery" piece; part reality, part documentary and a lot of music. Shooting in Healdsburg California, 65 miles north of San Francisco, Guitar Planet centers around Tom Ribbecke an acknowledged modern day Stradivari of guitar making and his willing crew of "knuckleheads" (as he affectionately calls them) in their daily struggle to make their newly formed factory work in today's hostile economic environment.
Why would Tom venture outside his comfortable workshop to start a second guitar making business?
"I wanted to make an affordable guitar using the same level of excellence my custom instruments are famous for. Trouble is, they cost upwards of $20,000 and take many hours of intensive labor to build. So the idea came to me that I could build a more affordable guitar, using technology available today, that would be 90% as beautiful and acoustically perfect as my higher end instruments".
So, RGC (Ribbecke Guitar Corporation) was born. Whether RGC survives or not becomes one thread running through the Guitar Planet project.
Beneath the surface dwells the lives of 14 men dedicated to perfection and that's where the story really begins. I think a quote from Ben Kaufman who has worked with Tom for several years really describes the feeling these men have for their craft:
"...every single day I am learning something new. We put our blood, sweat and our
lives into building these instruments but when we get the satisfaction
of seeing how people respond to these guitars there is no better
feeling".
